Barycypraea is a genus from the family of cowries (Cypraeidae) and was established in 1927 by Franz Alfred Schilder . Type species is the extinct species Barycypraea caputocketae . Barycypraea includes only two recent species: On the one hand Barycypraea fultoni and on the other hand Barycypraea teulerei .

features

The callosity, the thickening of the case, is striking. This makes the species very heavy. The typical case sizes of Barycypraea fultoni are between 54 and 80 mm, the largest shell found is 85 mm. Barycypraea teulerei is smaller and rarely larger than 52 mm, here the record is 67 mm.

A distinction within the species Barycypraea fultoni can be made by comparing the undersides of the housing. Barycypraea f. fultoni is drawn in brown between the teeth, Barycypraea f. massieri does not have this drawing, but sometimes a few dots can be seen at the edges. Barycypraea f. amorimi is drawn similarly but has a lot more points. In addition, Barycypraea f. amorimi wider than both of the aforementioned snails. On the back of all representatives of this species there is an irregular pattern of curved lines. Barycypraea teulerei also has a pattern in the same color in the same place, but this pattern is very well demarcated from the remaining white / brown / gray areas of the snail shell. But this species has another special feature: it has no teeth at the opening. This is a rarity with the cowrie shells and is also common among other things. a. in some species of the genus Cypraeovula .

Habitat and Distribution

Distribution of the Barycypraea

The distribution areas of the two recent species of this genus are in the western Indian Ocean. The nominate form Barycypraea fultoni fultoni of the species Barycypraea fultoni comes off the east coast of South Africa , off the coasts of Mozambique the other two subspecies f. massieri and f. anorimi endemic. The depth of the habitat begins at 60 m and probably extends down to 250 m ( f. Amorimi ). Until a few years ago, evidence of the existence of these species was only found in the bellies of caught fish. In 1970 Barycypraea fultoni was considered extremely rare, only 25 specimens were known. Although many more cases have been found since then, it is still considered very rare. Descriptions of the habitat are hardly secure and are based on a few observations. After that, as is common with most cowrie shells, these representatives also live on sponges and corals. The species Barycypraea teulerei has no subspecies and occurs in the tributaries of the Indian Ocean, more frequently around Oman (Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Gulf of Oman) and less often in the Red Sea. Although this species is by far not as rare as Barycypraea fultoni , there is also a lack of reliable information on both the habitat and the nature of the living animal.

Systematics and types

There is agreement among the taxonomists on Barycypraea fultoni , which is always considered a species of the genus Barycypraea . However, there is disagreement about Barycypraea . In some considerations, this is assigned to the genus Bernaya established by Félix Pierre Jousseaume in 1884 . The majority of taxonomic systems lead this species under the genus Barycypraea . In his book on the cowries A Guide To Worldwide cowries from 2000 is teulerei of Felix Lorenz still under the genus Bernaya out, now it belongs to him to barycypraea .
