Félix Pierre Jousseaume

Félix Pierre Jousseaume (born April 12, 1835 in Vervant , † November 3, 1921 in Chantilly ) was a French doctor and malacologist .

Live and act

Félix Pierre Jousseaume studied in Paris and received his doctorate in medicine in 1862, his doctoral thesis is entitled " Des Végétaux parasites de l'Homme ". After his studies he stayed in Paris and practiced there as a general practitioner. He was a co-founder of the Société zoologique de France , of which he was president in 1878. After 1890 he gave up his previous activities and devoted himself to researching the mollusks. For this he undertook numerous expedition trips to the Red Sea. His collected finds - usually the mollusks but also other invertebrates - he handed over to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . Jousseaume wrote many short scientific articles, which were mainly published in the journals Naturaliste, revue illustrée des sciences naturelles , les Nouvelles archives des missions scientifiques et littéraires , la Revue et magasin de zoologie and le Bulletin de la Société zoologique de France .

He researched and worked on the internal systematics of snail families. The following genera from the cowrie shell family were established by him in 1884 and are still used today: Ipsa , Luria , Staphylaea , Trona , Umbilia , Zoila , Zonaria . He also researched, among other things, on these families: Spiny snails (Muricidae), ground snails (Cecilioididae, syn. Ferussaciidae), door snails (Clausiliidae), helmet snails (Cassidae), Cerithioidea and awl snails (Subulinidae).

In recognition of his work several genera and species were named after him: Jousseaumea Sacco 1894 Jousseaumiella Bourne in 1907, Metis jusseaumei (Richard), Amphibetaeus jousseaumei Coutière 1896 Neocallichirus jousseaumei (Nobili 1904), Murex jousseaumei Poirier 1883, Chlamys jousseaumei Bavay 1904 Cerithiopsis jousseaumei Jay & Drivas 2002 and Clathrosansonia jousseaumei (Bavai 1921).
