Bernd Arnold (photographer)
Bernd Arnold (* 1961 in Cologne ) is a German photographer and photo artist.
life and work
Arnold grew up in Cologne. From 1983 to 1990 he studied photography with Hans Meyer-Veden and Adolf Clemens at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences .
Since the end of the 1980s, Arnold has been working on religion, politics, demimondial, media and the business world. He arranges his work on these aspects of German society in the cycles “Power and Ritual”, “Black East Wild West” and “Insignificant Personalities”.
“Power and Ritual” shows how power is staged in different sociological systems. “Arnold's constant impulse to explore socially relevant rituals of the present can perhaps best be described as“ visual sociology ”. In particular, the images of the eight federal election campaigns that he has accompanied so far reveal a cold view of the complex fabric of sophisticated staging strategies in order to penetrate into the inner, even essence of this political phenomenon as with a dissecting knife. [...] the theatrical of politics condenses into an existential parable about mask and man. "
In addition to his documentary and artistic work, Arnold works as a freelance photographer for German and international print media.
He lives and works in Cologne.
