Athletic career

Bernd Benndorf began his footballer career in his home town of Wechselburg with the company sports association (BSG) Medicine. As a junior he moved to FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 1968 he was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team, with which he played four international matches. For the 1969/70 season Benndorf was added to the club's major league squad. He was also used immediately in the first league game. In the match between FCK and BSG Stahl Riesa he was called up as the central striker and with his goal to the 3-0 final score he was the goalscorer. Then regular player Dieter Erler took overBenndorf's position, and this came only once on the 3rd match day as a substitute. The FCK rose at the end of the season in the GDR league . In his immediate resurgence, Benndorf was only involved with two point matches, this time without a goal. Until 1973 he was only used in the 2nd team, which played in the third-rate district league. It was not until the 1973/74 season that Benndorf appeared again in the GDR league. With the now promoted FCK II, he played his last ten point games in higher-class football.
