Kanne came from a family of landowners from Steinheim (Westphalia) , whose family seat is the Breitenhaupt estate . During the First World War he served as Rittmeister in Hussar Regiment No. 8 . On August 4, 1933, he was appointed Reich Commissioner for Dairy and Fat Management and held this position until Adolf Hitler's death on April 30, 1945. During the Nazi era , this position gave him the nickname “Reichsmilchkanne”. From November 5, 1934, his area of ​​responsibility also included the implementation of market regulations ; in this function he also made agreements in the field of tax auditing with the President of the Reich Association of German Agricultural Cooperatives.
