He managed his manor Surenburg in Westphalia and, in addition to his offices in Berlin, was also a member of the Tecklenburger district assembly and the Westphalian provincial assembly . On October 30, 1879, he was elected second (until 1880), and in 1886 first Vice-President of the Prussian House of Representatives , and after the death of Ludwig Windthorst took over the leadership of the Center Party in the House of Representatives. Baron Heereman held these offices until his death.

Heereman, who was an extraordinarily hard-working MP and an effective, well-informed and moderate speaker, had a great interest in art, was a co-founder of the Zeitschrift für Christian Kunst and chairman of the Westphalian Art Association in Munster. He also campaigned strongly for the Münster Royal Academy to be promoted to university in 1902. In his last parliamentary speech, Heereman dealt with the establishment of the medical faculty and the expansion of the university library in Münster.

Baron Heereman is buried in Riesenbeck (Tecklenburg district), not far from Surenburg Castle.

Heereman had been an honorary citizen of the city of Münster since 1897 ; in 1891 Pope Leo XIII had awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Gregory .

He was an honorary member of the Catholic student association VKDSt. Saxonia Münster in the CV .
