Bernd Pohlenz (born August 8, 1956 in Lahr / Black Forest ) is a German draftsman and cartoon artist.

biography

After dropping out of German studies and art history in 1980 in favor of his artistic work, Bernd Pohlenz worked as a cartoonist for newspapers and magazines. He first became known as a draftsman for Tip magazine (Berlin), the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung , for the Tagesspiegel (Berlin) and as an employee of the legendary magazine TransAtlantik . After Pohlenz's body language was published in 1987 and a solo exhibition at the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hanover, he mainly produced commissioned work for industry and various institutions.

In contrast to the classic daily newspaper caricaturists who comment on daily politics in black and white drawings, Bernd Pohlenz works with colored and rather timeless depictions. At the beginning of the 90s he was satisfied that the newspapers could use new printing techniques to color almost all pages in very high quality and wanted to show this in a special way. In this way, Pohlenz was able to publish hundreds of large color cartoons and illustrations in many newspapers, often as wide as a page or as a cover title up to a double page. He had tried out these color display options beforehand in city magazines ( Tip , Wiener , Skull Cleaver ), in Playboy and Penthouse , in order to then use them in daily newspapers.

Pohlenz worked as a part-time lecturer at the BTK ( Berlin Technical Art College ) from 2003 to 2011 . From 2005 to 2010 he was a draftsman at Handelsblatt and in 2011 he worked as a book ghostwriter for Random House Germany. He then conducted interviews and wrote essays and reports. He is also co-founder and artistic director of the world's largest social network for cartoon art www.toonpool.com, in which over 2500 artists from 130 countries exhibit their work.

Work examples

In 1998 he designed 120 cartoons as permanent exhibits for the German Money and Central Bank Museum (Frankfurt am Main) on behalf of the Deutsche Bundesbank , worked for Vorwerk (Wuppertal), Deutsche Bahn (Berlin), the Institute for Foreign Relations (Stuttgart) and for the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation (Berlin). In addition to content-related work for ZDF (Mainz) and the music video production DoRo (Dolezal / Rossacher, Vienna), he concentrated for a short period (1999–2003) on the daily political cartoon, which he ended when Chancellor Gerhard Schröder bought an original drawing from him .
