Bernd Walter (historian)

Bernd Walter (born August 12, 1951 in Ibbenbüren ) is a German historian . Until his retirement in 2016, he was head of the LWL Institute for Westphalian Regional History .

Bernd Walter studied history, physics and educational science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1975 to 1979 . In 1984 he received his doctorate under Karl-Georg Faber and Peter Burg on the civil service in Münster between class and civil society (1800–1850) . In 1991 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . In 1995 he received the Venia legendi for Recent History and Westphalian State History.

From 1983 to 1999 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Westphalian Regional History, today's LWL Institute for Westphalian Regional History, of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe , from 1999 until his retirement in June 2016 he was its director. Since 2002 he has also been an adjunct professor in the history / philosophy department of the University of Münster.

His focus is on the history of Westphalia in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of psychiatry, the social history of the 19th century and the time of National Socialism .
