The former town of Berneck in the Black Forest is now part of the town of Altensteig . The small old town - especially the upper town located on a mountain spur - is a popular tourist destination. The place is dominated by Berneck Castle from the late Staufer period, famous for its shield wall . The shield wall is 38 meters high and up to 2.60 meters thick.

history

Berneck is documented as Bernech in the first half of the 12th century , and as Berneck in 1294 . A noble free family initially named itself after him. From 1294 a lower nobility family sat here, who appear in the suite of the Counts of Hohenberg . It was inherited by the lords of Validlingen . Until the transition to Württemberg in 1805, these determined the fate of the town, which was elevated to a town in the 14th century (Berneck was first mentioned as a town in 1367). Berneck headed for the canton Neckar-Black Forest of the imperial knighthood.

The local lord Balthasar von Validlingen introduced the Reformation in 1536 . The Protestant parish church dates back to a chapel from 1490 (attested as St. Mary's Church in 1508) and was renovated in 1753.

Until it was incorporated on January 1, 1972, Berneck was the second smallest town in Württemberg.

Regular events

The Bernecker Seenachtsfest has been celebrated since 1859. The festival has been taking place every two years for some time, the highlight being the evening fireworks.
