Bernhard Ahlers

Bernhard Ahlers (born July 18, 1874 in Bremen- Burg; † January 9, 1955 in Bremen-Lesum) was a German educator and Low German homeland researcher.

biography

Family, education and work

Ahlers came from parents from a boatman's house in which Low German was spoken. He grew up in Lesumbrok . He attended a preparatory institute in Lesum for training as a teacher and then the teachers' seminar in Stade. In 1894 he became a teacher at the elementary school in Rekum . In 1904 he switched to elementary school in Aumund-Hammersbeck and became rector there in 1927. In 1936 he retired from school.

Further memberships and offices

Ahlers founded the Natural History Association for Vegesack with others in 1901 and was active here on a voluntary basis. Hundreds of lectures in High and Low German made him known beyond the borders of the region. The subjects of his lecture included his homeland, the whaling he was familiar with, the dikes, seafaring and fishing. In 1911 he was co-founder and for a long time chairman of the Heimat- und Museumverein für Vegesack , Blumenthal district and the surrounding area in Bremen-Nord . He also directed and designed the Vegesack local history museum (today in Schönebeck Palace ).

Honors

  • The Bernhard Ahlers Street in Bremen, Vegesack, Aumund district Hammer Beck, was named after him.
