Iris Romen (* in Maastricht , Netherlands ) is a Dutch singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who lives in Berlin .

Life and music

Iris Romen grew up in Maastricht, where she studied jazz / singing at the Maastricht University of Music until 2001 . From 2002 to 2009 she was the singer of the Aachen band Señor Torpedo , for which she also wrote and co-composed the lyrics. In 2004 she moved to Berlin, where she performed regularly on Saturday evenings at Schwoof in Clärchens Ballhaus with her "Ballhausband" from 2005 to 2006 . In the same house she gave acoustic concerts in the hall of mirrors, at which she brought her wide repertoire from Brecht / Weil to Johnny Cash to the audience.

In 2006, after a concert with her swing band in White Trash (Berlin), she met the musicians Trinity Sarratt and April Walz, who invited her to play double bass and occasionally sing with The Runaway Brides . At the same time, Iris Romen sings as a guest singer - among others with Andrej Hermlin & His Swing Dance Orchestra , Mark Scheibe and Ray Collins' Hot-Club as well as, with occasional bands, for the Dutch embassies in Tanzania and Peru . In 2008 she gave birth to a son whom she is raising alone. From 2009 to 2012 Iris Romen played solo, accompanying her voice herself on double bass, Fender Rhodes and occasionally with acoustic guitar .

In 2010 she got to know the musician and producer Johnny Bluth (from the band The Johnny Trouble Trio from Stuttgart) through a Johnny Cash tribute concert in Regensburg , where she played the part of June Carter , with whom it clicked so much musically, that she decided to record her debut album in its largely analog studio (Running Gun Recordings). Three songs on the album were recorded by Mischkah Wilke in Berlin, who also runs an analog studio (Kozmic Sound).

At the end of 2010 she discovered Michael Rank (Chet Records) at a solo concert in Munich and decided to sign her with Chet Records. On August 24, 2012, a CD presentation took place in the hall of mirrors at Clärchens Ballhaus . The " Initiative Musik " then decided in October 2012 to subsidize the promotion of the album with a grant.

Vintage Gal Hour

On April 12, 2013 she released her self-composed English-language debut album "Vintage Gal Hour" (Chet Records). The album was produced by Johnny Bluth and Iris Romen themselves. Iris Romens music on the album refers to the zeitgeist of the 50s / 60s, with the style of her songs running across different styles. She has been playing live since December 2012 with her band Iris Romen & Her All-Star Friends, which consists of Julius Conrad (“twang” guitar), Dalai Cellai ( cello ) and Sascha “Bachi” Bachmann ( drums ).

Ben Becker

Yoyo Röhm, long-time musical companion of actor Ben Becker , engaged her in May 2012 as a permanent double bass player and background singer in his band for the concert program “Den See”.
