Bernhard Brons (born April 8, 1811 in Emden ; † March 15, 1893 ibid) was a German businessman and politician.

Life

Bernhard Brons was a son of the merchant Berend Brons (1770-1819), who was born in Leer. The father became completely destitute during the continental blockade. Bernhard Brons and his brother Ysaak Brons received extensive commercial training and founded the company “Y. & B. Brons ”and initially operated a wholesale business in grain. A few years later they also became active as sea owners and had sailing ships that sailed to China and America. They also ran a bank and agency owned by Lloyd's Maritime Insurers.

Brons later worked as vice-president of the board of directors of Germanischer Lloyd . From 1852 to 1888 he was director of the first marine insurance company in Emden. He had a seat on the supervisory board of Emder Heringsfischerei-AG, which ran into problems in 1878. Brons helped to clean it up and to obtain aid from the Prussian government. He was also a member of the board of directors of commercial companies . In all positions he successfully campaigned for the concerns of Emden and East Frisia in trade and economy.

In 1843 Brons co-founded the “Concordia” steamship company. From 1844 this operated with the steamer "Kronprinzessin Marie" between Leer , Delfzijl and the seaside resorts of East Frisia. He was also very committed to connecting East Frisia to the rail network. When the German Industry and Trade Congress was founded in 1861 in Heidelberg , Brons represented East Frisia. For some time he worked as director of the Hanover West Railway and as a Belgian consul. After the death of his brother in 1886, Brons continued to run the business alone until 1891. He then passed them on to Bernhard and Friedrich, who were Ysaak's sons, and his son Arnold.

Brons also worked as an Emden Senator and took on numerous honorary positions. From 1851 to 1854 he represented the trade and industry of East Friesland in the First Chamber of the Hanoverian Estates Assembly . In 1855 he received a mandate for the Second Chamber in which he should represent Emden. Since he was a Mennonite, he was not allowed to exercise the office. From 1879 to 1882 Brons was a member of the National Liberals in the Prussian House of Representatives. He was also involved in the Prussian State Council as a finance and trade expert.

Brons had been married to Johanna Sasse (1820-1897) since June 4, 1841, whose father worked as an auctioneer in Hage . The couple had nine children.
