Bernhard Feldmann

Bernhard Matthias Feldmann (born November 11, 1704 in Cölln ; † October 21, 1776 in Neuruppin ) was a German doctor , naturalist and writer .

Life

Born as the son of the "laboratory assistant", citizen and shoemaker Bernhard Feldmann in Cölln on the Spree. His father was a student of the doctor, theologian and alchemist Johann Konrad Dippel . Bernhard Feldmann studied medicine in Berlin and Halle . He then went to Holland, made the acquaintance of the naturalist Albertus Seba in Amsterdam and received his doctorate in 1732 at the University of Leiden . In doing so, he developed a penchant for natural research that lasted until his death. So he put on extensive natural history collections, which he later donated to the Berlin Academy . In 1733 he became a city ​​physician in Neuruppin , and five years later tooDistrict physicist .

As far as Feldmann's practice as a doctor allowed, he devoted himself to scientific research. Apparently he was also very interested in history and genealogy, because he copied a large number of council files and asked residents of the city about local historical facts. A 1200-page manuscript "Miscellanea historica der Stadt Neu Ruppin" contains his records, which today are considered the most important collection of historical sources Neuruppin, as the original files were destroyed in the town fire in 1787. The original of the manuscript is in the Neuruppin Local History Museum.
