Bernhard Hartz

Bernhard Hartz (also Bernt Hartz ; born July 15, 1781 in Svorkmo , † February 20, 1822 in Gudum ) was a Norwegian missionary in Greenland and pastor .

Life

Bernhard Hartz was the son of mine manager John Hartz (1744-1821) and his wife Birgitte Lucie Boyhn (1741-1826). He finished school in Trondheim in 1799 and then worked as a private tutor. In 1801 he began studying at the University of Copenhagen , but had to interrupt it to continue working as a teacher in Stubbekøbing . He graduated in 1806 while teaching in Copenhagen at the same time . In 1805 he enrolled at the Greenland Seminary and was employed as a missionary in Aasiaat the following year after his ordination .

He was supposed to be head of a planned school in Qeqertarsuaq , which was never realized because of the gunboat war (1807-1814). On September 6, 1807, he married in Ilimanaq Sara Margrethe Lammerssen (1790-1869), daughter of the senior assistant Johann Friedrich Lammerssen (1763-1826) and his wife Ane village (1752-1827). The war made it increasingly difficult to supply Greenland via Denmark and soon it was almost impossible to serve as a missionary in Greenland. In 1812 the last missionary from South Greenland traveled home to Denmark and in 1813 Hartz's only colleague from North Greenland followed suit , so that Berhard Hartz was the only missionary in Greenland. He moved from Aasiaat to Ilulissat , from where he served as a missionary throughout northern Greenland. At that time, the Greenlandic catechist Frederik Berthelsen , whom Hartz ordained in 1815, was working for South Greenland . He actually wanted to travel home in 1814, but had to stay because of the lack of staff. In 1816 he was allowed to return home suffering from scurvy and the following year he was pastor in Gudum Sogn and Fabjerg Sogn , but died five years later at the age of only 40 from the effects of his illness.
