Svorkmo is a village in the Norwegian municipality Orkland , located in the province ( Fylke ) Trøndelag . The place has 295 inhabitants (as of 2019).
geography
Svorkmo is located on the bank of the Orkla River . Riksvei 65 runs past the village and connects to Orkanger in the north. The name of the place is derived from the name of the river “Svorka”, which in turn probably comes from the Germanic factitive for “to become dark” or “to become black”.
history
From 1645 to 1845 a smelter was operated in the village. Svorkmo served as the administrative center for the municipality Orkland, which existed from 1920 to 1962, before it was united with Orkanger to form Orkdal municipality . On January 1, 2020, Orkdal was transferred to the newly created Orkland municipality as part of the state- wide municipal reform. Already on January 1, 2018 the affiliation of the place changed from the then province Sør-Trøndelag to the newly created Fylke Trøndelag.
The Årlivoll skole is located in Svorkmo , where students in grades 1 to 10 are taught. The school was built in 1968.
