Bernhard I of Lebus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard (Latin Bernardus ) was the first known bishop of Lebus today . It was mentioned in 1133 (?) And 1147 (?).

Life

In the necrology of the monastery of St. Vincent near Breslau in the 13th century, two bishops Bernhard von Lebus were commemorated, one for the day of death on October 4th and the other on December 4th.

On March 16, 1133, a bishop Bernhard von Lebus is said to have been present at the establishment of the alleged Premonstratensian monastery Strzelno in the diocese of Kruszwica, according to a document that only the Polish scholar Jan Długosz cites in the 17th century. This document is otherwise unknown, and information about a Strzelno monastery is only available from 1190. The document thus seems to be wrong in this form. It may, however, contain true parts, since a church in Strzelno already existed at that time.

In 1147 King Heinrich VI complained to Pope Eugene III. about a Polish bishop Bernhard. Since there was no other Polish bishop of this name at that time, it could be the Lubusz bishop.

Some historians consider it possible that Bishop Bernhard von Lebus is identical to the Spanish missionary bishop Bernhard , who was commissioned by Duke Bolesław III in 1121/22 . Wrymouth evangelized in Pomerania. Duke Bolesław founded the Lebus diocese about three years later.
