Bernhard III. von Wölpe

Bernhard III. von Wölpe (* 1230–1240; † September 17, 1310 ) was Count of Wölpe and Archbishop of Magdeburg and Bremen .

Life

He was a son of Count Konrad II von Wölpe (son of Bernhard II von Wölpe ) and Salome, geb. Countess of Wunstorf .

He became canon in Magdeburg on May 15, 1255, cathedral waiter on May 1, 1272, provost of Mildensee (Nienburg) on ​​July 14, 1275 and archdeacon of Waldeser on June 16, 1276 .

In the bishop's election in 1277 he was defeated by Günther I. von Schwalenberg . However, he was in feud with Margrave Otto IV of Brandenburg and resigned the following year. Bernhard was elected archbishop in 1279. But since he could not assert himself against the pressure of the Brandenburg margraves , he too gave up in 1282 and went to Bremen.

Here he became archbishop again in 1307, but was not recognized by the then Pope Clement V and finally gave up in 1310 shortly before his death.

Bernhard was the last male descendant of the Counts of Wölpe , with him the 200-year reign of the Counts of Wölpe came to an end.
