Bernhard Kammel

Bernhard Kammel (born September 28, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian author , designer and film director .

Life

Bernhard Kammel is the grandson of the architect Leo Kammel . From 1980 to 1995 he studied architecture, theology and forestry and worked in various architecture offices and as a forest manager.

Works

In the early 1980s he published short stories and reports in various print media. He has been photographing black and white reports since 1979, color portraits and large-format narrative panel paintings since 1999. In 2004 he began with extended “still portraits” as moving images that show a sequence of moments of breathing, standing and looking.

In 2005 he founded his film production company, which has been called Film REAKTOR since 2018. Kammel composes his films as works that are indivisible in themselves, from the original script to the design of the visual level (stage, camera and montage). For the film Late Summer Night, however, he found a congenial set designer in Lyudmila Kusakowa.

Kammel used the then vacant Grand Etablissement Gschwandner for large parts of the shooting of Elysium Hernalsiense. Shortly after the film was finished, he repaired the building and founded the transdisciplinary art institution REAKTOR . The late classicist-historicist building of the REAKTOR was supplemented by modern technical infrastructure in the course of the renovation. A cinema was set up in the former Strauss-Lanner-Saal. The distinctive chandeliers as well as many other parts of the interior were designed by him especially for the REAKTOR.
