history

The Etablissement Gschwandner was a wine tavern from the 1830s at today's address Hernalser Hauptstraße 39 and has been preserved as one of the last suburban entertainment venues of the 19th century. It was built as a salon in 1877 after the demolition of the hall, which was built in 1839 on the property originally extending as far as Ottakringer Straße , and after the demolition of an extension from 1846 according to plans by the master builder Johann Gschwandner (son of the original property owner and wine teller Johann Gschwandner, 1802– 1862) was built in the garden part of the property at Hernalser Hauptstrasse 41, which was cut through by Stiftgasse (from 1894 on Geblergasse). The basilical hall, which was commissioned by Georg Gschwandner († 1901; age 69), a brother of the master builder, dates from the construction period and was expanded in 1887 and 1906.

The building was restored in 2017 under the direction of Bernhard Kammel . In the course of the renovation, a modern technical infrastructure was carefully integrated into the historical structure and the original room organization of the three event halls was restored. On February 16, 2018, the building was reopened with the new name REAKTOR as a transdisciplinary venue for the arts.

architecture

The large basilica hall from 1877 was expanded in 1887 and 1906 and shows a rustic structure on the rear in Geblergasse. The western single-storey extension probably from 1894 includes the so-called Strauss-Lanner-Saal, the rifle hall, which was built a little later, as well as the main entrance newly created as part of the renovation in 2018. The street-side front on Geblergasse has a simple plaster ashlar. Access from Hernalser Hauptstrasse is through a late historical apartment building from 1894; It is there that the establishment has a representative foyer with a wide staircase from 1883/1884.

The large basilica hall is a three-aisled rectangular hall with stucco-clad wooden columns, Corinthian capitals and richly decorated entablature. The upper clad windows are arched, the mirror vault has a wreath of lancets and ventilation grilles. Decorative wall painting was whitewashed.

Under the halls there are extensive vaulted cellars with an associated converted press house from the 17th century, a remnant of a former property of the cathedral chapter of St. Stephen .
