Bernhard Karl Julius Campe

Bernhard Karl Julius Campe (born April 30, 1820 in Glogau , † January 26, 1886 in Berlin ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently the commandant of the fortress Metz .

origin

His parents were the major a. D. Georg Philipp Campe (* August 17, 1784; † November 10, 1857) and his wife Emilie Berhardine von Nolte (* August 10, 1797; † February 8, 1843).

Life

He received his education at the grammar schools in Glogau, Thorn and Posen. After graduating, he joined the 6th Infantry Regiment as a musketeer on August 5, 1837 . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on January 13, 1838 and to Seconde Lieutenant on December 29, 1840. From April 1, 1848 to March 31, 1849 he was assigned to the 5th Combined Reserve Battalion. On October 12, 1852 he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant and was commanded from January 25, 1853 to June 10, 1853 at the rifle factory in Neisse. After his return he came to the 6th Landwehr Regiment, where he was company commander in the 2nd battalion in Freystadt from February 1, 1854 to June 16, 1859 . During this time he was appointed captain on March 2, 1858, with a patent on February 16, 1858. Then he was on May 8, 1860 as a company commander in the 6th combined infantry regiment and on July 1, 1860 company commander in the 46th infantry regiment. From May 5, 1866 to July 16, 1866, he was commander of the Samter Landwehr occupation battalion in Neisse, where he was also the commandant of the camp for the Hungarian Legion that was being organized . On July 17, 1866, he was transferred to the fusilier battalion as a leader and promoted to major on October 30, 1866.
He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion as commander on May 17, 1867 and from there back to the Fusilier Battalion as commander on August 21, 1869.

During the Franco-Prussian War he was wounded at Wörth (shock shot in the chest and shoulder) and again at Sedan (shot through the fingers of the right hand). But he fights again on Mont Valerien , the siege of Paris and the battle near Stonne. During that time he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on August 27, 1870 , on January 18, 1871, the promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and on February 16, 1871 also the Iron Cross 1st Class .

Because of his wounds and myopia, he was no longer fit for field service. After the war, he came to Kolberg Fortress on June 11, 1872, as commandant , and was assigned to the 46th Infantry Regiment à la suite . But on February 6, 1873 he was transferred to Metz as commandant and promoted to colonel on March 22, 1873. On May 8, 1877, he received the Order of the Crown, 2nd Class , on April 18, 1878, the character of Major General and, on September 23, 1879, the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves . He was then put up for disposal on February 14, 1880 with a pension .

He died on January 26, 1886 in Berlin and was then buried on January 30, 1886 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

Campe married Anna Marie Agnes Antonie Lippert on July 1, 1861 in Berlin (born March 26, 1842 - † September 22, 1902). After couple had a daughter named Else (born March 15, 1862), who died unmarried.
