Bernhard Ketzlick (born October 16, 1907 in Hanover ; † February 26, 1951 in Eisenschmitt ) was a German Catholic priest who was arrested by the Gestapo and interned in the Dachau concentration camp from 1941 to 1945 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1926, Bernhard Ketzlick joined the congregation of the Sacred Heart Missionaries in Hiltrup and made his perpetual profession on May 14, 1931 . He was ordained a priest on March 14, 1937. In a former Hammer monastery building he lived from 1938 on in a religious community and worked in the parish pastorally , especially in pastoral care for young people . At the same time he was vicar of the local Catholic community.

Both in the youth work and in the community community, the clergyman did not mince words in his negative attitude towards National Socialism. Because of his critical sermons, Ketzlick was targeted by the Gestapo at the end of July 1941 in the course of the monastery tower . He was arrested; the community premises were searched. The Secret State Police found nothing. Warned by the confiscation of the Hiltrup parent company shortly beforehand, Ketzlick had cleared out all “suspicious objects” such as sermon books, films, cameras, photographs, books for young people and song books.

After staying in prison in Hamm, Dortmund and Bochum and after severe interrogations and solitary confinement, he was sent to the concentration camp in Dachau in January 1942 , where he continued pastoral care undeterred despite massive threats of repression. As a result of the conditions of detention and storage, the clergyman fell ill with tuberculosis. After the concentration camp was liberated, Ketzlick did not recover from the disease.

He spent the last years of his life as a clergyman in the Haus Bergfeld sanatorium in Eisenschmitt, where he died of tuberculosis in 1951. Father Ketzlick was buried in the cemetery of the Convent of the Sacred Heart Missionaries in Hiltrup.

Posthumous honor

In his honor, a street was renamed Bernhard-Ketzlick-Straße in 2013 by resolution of the Hamm-Uentrop district council .
