Bernhard Mejer (born December 13, 1570 in Flensburg , † April 24, 1634 in Copenhagen ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman.

Live and act

Bernhard Mejer was a son of Johannes Meyer (* 1530; † August 4, 1584) and his wife Anna, née Pepers from Hamburg . His father was a pastor at the St. Mary's Church in Flensburg and provost . His younger brother Johannes (1573-1617) was the father of the cartographer Johannes Mejer . The family's surname is mentioned alternately in sources. Mejer himself wrote a dedication in the context of a funeral sermon in which he used the spelling "Mejer". Latinized spellings such as Mejerus , Meierus or Meyerus can often be found.

Mejer attended the Latin school in Flensburg and enrolled in 1591 to study Protestant theology at the University of Jena . After receiving his master's degree in 1594, he studied at the University of Tübingen from 1599 . In 1601 he was appointed rector of the Latin school and second castle preacher in Hadersleben . In 1607 he followed his uncle Jürgen Schröder as pastor of the local Marienkirche . In 1612 he moved to the Nikolaikirche in Kiel and in 1616 to the St. Petrikirche in Copenhagen . At this church of the German community he received a salary of 1,300 Reichstalers . Since he wrote Comoediae sacrae , Latin school comedies on the content of the Bible, in the later years of his life , it can be assumed that he also worked as a teacher in Copenhagen. Of the comedies, only Lampades appeared in print on the parable of the wise and foolish virgins .

Mejer was evidently more interested in humanistic studies than in his pastor duties. In 1633 he had a conflict with the Zeeland bishop Hans Poulsen Resen , who accused him of disregarding Danish canon law, as German students who had been studying took over his sermons. On the apparently correct allegations, Mejer was convicted and should lose his offices. A grace could avert this, so that he kept the office until the end of his life.

family

On October 7, 1604, Mejer married Botilde Tolner's first marriage. Johannes Mejer comes from this marriage . In his second marriage he probably married Agathe, whose father Christian Petri was a land clerk from Nordstrand .
