Urban Gaubisch (* 1527 in Ortrand ; † January 2, 1612 in Eisleben ) was a German printer .

Life

Urban Gaubisch was born in the town of Ortrand, now in southern Brandenburg , as the son of Alexius Gaubisch. His mother Ursula was the daughter of Johann Parix, councilor from Ortrander. After the early death of his father, he was placed in an Augustinian monastery in Großenhain. In 1539 he fled the monastery with other friars and made the acquaintance of Martin Luther , through whom he came to Leipzig . Luther an apprenticeship he had in the prestigious here printing of Jacob Bärwald taught and Gaubisch finally learned the craft of typography .

After leaving Leipzig for a few years and completing his years of traveling , he returned to the city in 1551 and married Margarethe Niedersteter, Bärwald's sister-in-law. He stayed in Leipzig until 1555 and pursued his craft here. Finally, at the invitation of the Count von Mansfeld , he opened his own print shop in Eisleben. Due to its kinship with Bärwald, the young print shop soon enjoyed a very good reputation. There were also family ties to the Wittenberg-based bookseller Bartel Vogel . Since his wife Margarethe died soon afterwards, Gaubisch married Barbara, the daughter of Simon Gaßmann, a councilor on the outskirts of the town in 1566.

His printing press in Eisleben was soon able to establish itself. He worked in a functional unit as a printer and publisher . Here Gaubisch printed, among other things, the first two parts of the complete edition of Luther's writings (1564, 1565) and, in 1566, the first edition of Luther's table speeches . Other authors he published were Christoph Irenäus (1522–1595), Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560), Cyriacus Spangenberg (1528–1604), Martin Chemnitz (1522–1586), Joachim Westphal (1510–1574) and Tilemann Hesshus (1527-1588). Often they were spiritual writings. But he also produced secular printed matter, for example for the magistrate of the city of Eisleben. Among other things, a fire order appeared here . However, they only made up a fraction of the total work. Many of the publications appeared in second or third editions, and some had even more editions.

Around 1576 Gaubisch opened a branch of his printing company in Halle an der Saale , which, however, did not last long and was given up a few years later. Well over 100 prints by contemporary authors are said to have appeared in the two printing works in Eisleben and Halle during Urbanus Gaubisch's lifetime.

family

Gaubisch's two marriages resulted in nine sons and four daughters. His son Jakob Gaubisch (1563-1616) also became a printer and in 1600 took over the Bärwaldsche Buchdruckerei in Leipzig. He was also involved in his father's book printing company in Eisleben, which he eventually took over and continued.
