Bernhard Niehues

Bernhard Niehues (born May 19, 1831 in Greven , † April 26, 1909 in Münster ) was a German historian , secret government councilor and papal secret chamberlain .

Life

Bernhard Niehues, the son of the master craftsman Johann Hermann Wilhelm Niehues, studied philosophy , classical philology and history at the Catholic Academy in Münster from 1852 . From 1853 to 1856 he belonged to the Philological Seminary under Ferdinand Deycks and Franz Winiewski . On 12 July 1856 he was charged with a historical study of the tyrant Dionysius Dr. phil. PhD . In 1859 he completed his habilitation there for the subject of history and since then has held lectures at the academy, initially as a private lecturer, from 1863 as an associate professor and finally from 1877 as a full professor. He read on subjects from ancient history as well as the Middle Ages and early modern times; in the end he mainly represented ancient history . From 1862 to 1888 Niehues was President and Vice President of the Historical Association of Münster several times. On March 19, 1896 he became a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . From 1904 to 1909 he was a member of the Prussian manor house . In 1907 he was released from the obligation to give lectures.

Niehues' main work is the (unfinished) monograph History of the Relationship between Empire and Papacy in the Middle Ages , a topic that he pursued from the ancient beginnings to the High Middle Ages .

His son of the same name, Bernhard Niehues (1868–1950), together with Friedrich Dütting, built one of the most important textile factories of its time in Nordhorn from 1898.
