Bernhard Overbeck

Bernhard Overbeck (born April 1, 1942 in Berlin ; † July 8, 2018 ) was a German numismatist .

Bernhard Overbeck came to numismatics as a child, infected by his father's passion for collecting . He studied prehistory and early history, ancient history and Roman provincial archeology at the University of Munich and was there in 1969 with the prehistorian Joachim Werner with the work History of the Alpine Rhine Valley in Roman times. He received his doctorate on the basis of the archaeological evidence , which he added another volume on the found coins five years later. His habilitation in 1981 at the University of Augsburg focused on Celtic numismatics.

From 1969 to 2006 Overbeck worked at the State Mint Collection in Munich , initially as a conservator for Roman and Celtic coins, and from 1991 as its chief collection director. He also taught as an adjunct professor at the Chair of Ancient History at the University of Augsburg and as a visiting professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and at the University of Texas at Austin . Overbeck was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . As a representative of the Free State of Bavaria, he was a member of the Numismatic Commission of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany . On his retirement from active service, a portrait medal was dedicated to him by the Munich medalist Erich Ott . Overbeck was among other things a member of the Bavarian Numismatic Society .
