Bernhard Pollack (born August 14, 1865 ; † March 3, 1928 in Berlin ) was a German ophthalmologist and neuroanatomist , professor of ophthalmology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and a recognized pianist .

Life

His father Jakob Pollack was a businessman in Berlin , his mother, nee. Ledermann, came from Silesia . He had two older brothers, Joseph and Paul. His sister Clara (1857-1896) was the mother of Richard Lichtheim . His second sister Betty, married. Friedmann, was murdered in Auschwitz .

He was the first husband of the actress and soprano Fritzi Massary (1882-1969). The marriage was short-lived. In 1912 Pollack married for the second time, Baroness Marie Elisabeth (Miky) Popper von Podhrágy (1887–1922), the daughter of Baron Berthold Popper von Podhrágy (1857–1929) and Katharina Löwenstein. They had a son, Hanns.

He died in 1928 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee (field H, section II).

Scientific career

Pollack studied at Heidelberg University and Leipzig University . In 1893 he received his doctorate under Carl Weigert on metastatic lung cancer . After completing his studies, he settled in Berlin. There he worked from 1898 to 1904 as an assistant in the polyclinic of Emanuel Mendel , in the anatomical institute with Heinrich Wilhelm Waldeyer , at the institute for infectious diseases of Robert Koch and in the eye clinic of Paul Silex . In Mendel's practice, he worked with the Polish neurologist Edward Flatau and became friends with him. He published works with him and Max Bielschowsky . In early 1897 he published a handbook for The Staining Technique for the Nervous System , which deals with the question of microscopic staining techniques for neuroanatomical specimens and has been translated into English and French. In 1905 the third edition of the book appeared in German.

In 1919 he became professor of ophthalmology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin.

The musician Pollack

In addition to his work as a doctor, Pollack was a recognized pianist. He was a student of Moritz Moszkowski in Berlin. He performed with Fritz Kreisler and the violinist József Szigeti . His friends included Emil von Sauer , Moriz Rosenthal , Teresa Carreño , Józef Hofmann , Leopold Godowski and Fannie Bloomfield-Zeisler . In 1911 he was one of the founders and the first conductor of the Berlin Doctors Orchestra .
