The Berlin Doctors Orchestra is a lovers orchestra founded in 1911 . Under the artistic direction of its conductor Kevin McCutcheon , the program mainly consists of symphonic works from the Romantic era . In addition, it has set itself the goal of bringing little-known music closer to its listeners. The orchestra's patron is Roland Hetzer .

Representatives of all professional groups play in this orchestra today, not just medical professionals. The Berlin Doctors Orchestra is a registered association with around 65 members.

history

In 1911, the Berlin ophthalmologist Bernhard Pollack founded an amateur orchestra that was to consist mainly of medical professionals. One of the co-founders was Julius Levin . It is probably the oldest still existing medical orchestra in Germany. After the First World War and the political turmoil of the post-war period , the orchestra reached its first heyday in 1928.

Due to the emigration of many members, the orchestra experienced a setback during the Nazi era . It performed together with the "Berliner Rechtsswahrer-Orchester" founded by Julius Kopsch shortly before the Second World War , with which it later merged to form the "Berliner Ärzte- und Rechtsswahrer-Orchester" or "Berliner Ärzte- und Juristen-Orchester". In 1964, through the merger with the "Berlin Orchestra Association" from Berlin-Reinickendorf, the Berlin Doctors Orchestra was created in its current form.

The orchestra today

The conductor of the Berlin Doctors Orchestra has been Kevin McCutcheon since 1986 , under whose direction mostly symphonic works of the Romantic period , but also little-known pieces by contemporary composers , are performed. Through his work at the Deutsche Oper Berlin he succeeded in winning soloists there for the concerts of the Berlin Doctors Orchestra.

The orchestra performs twice a year, mostly in May and November, so far in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonie , and occasionally in the great hall of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the concerts had to be canceled in 2020. If possible, the spring concert 2021 will take place in the great hall of the Philharmonie.
