Roland Hetzer (born January 17, 1944 in Neuhammer , Sudetenland ) is a German heart surgeon and university professor . He was medical director of the German Heart Center Berlin .

Life

Hetzer attended the Holbein grammar school in Augsburg . After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1963 and then moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1964 . In 1969 he made the state examination and the American ECFMG examination. In the same year his doctorate he became Dr. med. In 1970 he was approved .

After working as an assistant doctor in Augsburg, Roland Hetzer accepted a position as a research assistant at the Hannover Medical School in 1971 and went to the California Pacific Medical Center and Stanford University as a Clinical Fellow in 1976 , where Norman Shumway was a pioneer in performing heart operations.

In 1977 he became a specialist in surgery. After returning to Germany, he worked as a senior physician in Hanover from 1978. There he completed his habilitation in 1979. In 1983 he was given an extraordinary professorship and in the same year began to establish heart transplantation in Hanover .

When he was appointed university professor, Hetzer came to the Free University of Berlin in 1985 and built up the German Heart Center Berlin (DHZB) as a senior physician in cardiac surgery and medical director. In 1987 he carried out the first successful implantation of an artificial heart there. In 1990 he was the last chairman of the West Berlin part of the Berlin Surgical Society . On October 1, 2014, Hetzer retired as Medical Director and Director of the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the DHZB; Volkmar Falk is his successor .

For his achievements, Hetzer was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin in 1987 and the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, in 1995 for the establishment of the Academy for Cardio Technology and the associated state recognition of training as a cardio technician . Since 2009 he has been chairman of the European register for patients with mechanical circulatory support e. V., Euromacs. Hetzer is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Friede Springer Heart Foundation .

Roland Hetzer is married and has four children. His brother Gerhard Hetzer is director of the Bavarian Main State Archives in Munich.
