Bernhard Sickert

Bernhard Sickert (* 1862 in Munich ; † August 2, 1932 in Jordans, Buckinghamshire ) was a British painter , etcher and graphic artist.

Live and act

Sickert was the grandson of Johann Jürgen Sickert , son of Oswald Sickert and the younger brother of Walter Sickert . Born in Munich, he moved to England with his family in 1868. After he had worked through several jobs without success, he was allowed to work only as an artist from 1885 due to his poor health. Three years later he became a member of the New English Art Club . He exhibited with the London Impressionists in 1889. With his brother Walter he toured Holland, Italy and France, often staying in Dieppe . They exhibited their works together several times, beginning in 1895 at the Dutch Gallery. In 1911/12 Sickert took part in exhibitions of the Allied Artists' Association. From 1914 to 1918 he worked as a nurse in a hospital. He died after a long illness in the village of Jordans in Buckinghamshire, England.

Sickert painted in particular landscape motifs and still lifes . His painting style was influenced by his father and James McNeill Whistler . He wrote a biography about Whistler in 1908.
