Life

He comes from the Thuringian noble family von Arnswald and was the eldest son of Karl August von Arnswald (1776–1831), Herr auf Kelbra, Grand Ducal Saxon Chief Forester, and Ernestine von Holleben (1789–1877)

From 1840 Arnswald was captain of the castle at the Wartburg during its restoration (1838–1890), whereby he particularly advocated medieval values: the ancient and the earlier architectural style should be restored. With regard to the design of the rooms, he agreed with the architect Hugo von Ritgen (1811–1889) on most questions . But often Arnswald, a rather positive-minded man with a cheerful disposition, had to act as a mediator between Ritgen and the painter Moritz von Schwind (1804–1871).

He was artistically gifted and drew watercolors himself , which can still be viewed at the Wartburg today.

Arnswald was very close friends with the poet, researcher and collector Ludwig Bechstein (1801-1860). He died unmarried shortly after reaching the age of 70 at the Wartburg.

Honors

In Eisenach, Bernhard-von-Arnswald-Strasse bears his name.
