Bernhard von Lohn

Bernhard von Lohn (* 1586–1590; † after 1638) was a 17th century cloth merchant from Düren .

The dates of birth and death can only be given roughly, namely he was born between 1586 and 1590. He died in 1638 or 1639. His books end in 1638. The family may come from Lohn bei Jülich .

Bernhard von Lohn was the son of Wilhelm von Lohn from Düren, who was the son of Johann von Lohn, a lay judge from Düren . He was lay judge from 1543 to 1556. Johann von Lohn was also mayor of Düren around 1565 .

In 1604 Bernhard von Lohn started his apprenticeship with the cloth merchant Theobald Brandt in Strasbourg . In 1616 he married Katharina Pyrn, who comes from a family of merchants in Düren . In 1629 he married Susanna Oberholz, who belonged to an important Cologne merchant family. The first marriage remained childless, the second marriage resulted in a daughter Maria. The first wife brought the house "To the seven stars" on the chicken market from Lohn into the marriage. He used the building as a residential and commercial building. Later this was the restaurant "Bürgerhof", Weierstr. 23.

In 1612 von Lohns founded a shop in Düren. It was dissolved seven years after his death at the instigation of his daughter Maria. His business capital was over 68,000 guilders in 1631 . Wages did not buy anything from the cloth makers in Düren . He bought 48% of his goods in Cologne , 20% in Aachen and 32% in Frankfurt am Main . He traded in 15 types of wool, 4 types of cotton, 7 types of linen, 13 types of mixed fabrics, 12 types of silk and 16 types of other goods that were needed for clothing . His sales area was the Düren area to Cologne and Schleiden .
