Berry is a city in Fayette County in the US state of Alabama . According to the 2010 census, Berry had 1,148 inhabitants. Berry has a total area of ​​29.0 km².

Berry is located in northwest Alabama in the southern United States. It is about 35 miles east of the Mississippi border and 23 miles south of the 733 square km William B. Bankhead National Forest .

Nearby locations include Fayette (10 miles west), Oakman (10 miles east), Glen Allen (11 miles northwest), Carbon Hill (20 miles north), and Belk (16 miles west). The next larger city with 212,000 inhabitants is about 63 kilometers southeast of Birmingham .

history

The town was named after Thompson Berry, one of the area's early large landowners. Around 1882 the Georgia-Pacific Railroad built a railroad through the city.

The first school was built in 1891 but burned down and was rebuilt in 1895. The Alabama Christian College existed from 1912 to 1922 . In 1902 and 1913 the city center was destroyed by fires, but rebuilt.

According to the 2000 census , there were 1238 inhabitants, distributed among 516 households and 352 families. The population density was 42.8 inhabitants / km². 91.44% of the population were white, 6.38% were African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 32.8% of households.
