Bert Roach
Bert Roach (born August 21, 1891 in Washington, DC , † February 16, 1971 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
life and career
Bert Roach began his acting career as a stage performer in New York City at the age of 17 . He has starred in musical comedies such as Louisina Lou and appeared as a tenor singer . In 1914 he began his film career at the Keystone Studios by Mack Sennett . With his overweight and an oversized mustache in some of his roles, he became a very busy film comedian, especially in short film comedies, but without achieving great fame. Roach starred as Paul von Hindenburg in Sennett's comedy Yankee Doodle in Berlin , a US war propaganda film in the context of the First World War .
In the 1920s, Roach was also seen in several full-length silent films in important supporting roles, several times as the jovial and comical friend of the main actor - best known as a colleague and friend of the tragic main character in the classic A Man of the Masses by King Vidor . In contrast to many of his silent film colleagues, Roach made the leap into talkies at the end of the 1920s, but over the course of the 1930s and 1940s his roles became steadily smaller and less important. As the anxious roommate of Leon Ames ' character in the horror film Murder on Rue Morgue with Bela Lugosi , Roach had one of his best-known appearances in talkies. He was cast several times in small roles as a comical drunk.
By the time of his last film in 1951, Roach had appeared in over 350 theatrical productions. Roach, who was married to Gladys Marie Johnson, died in 1971 at the age of 79.
