Bert Sommer (born February 7, 1949 - July 23, 1990 in Albany , New York ) was an American musician, songwriter and actor.
As an actor, played summer for the Broadway - musical Hair . He also had a role in the movie Ironweed .
He became known through an appearance at the Woodstock Festival on August 15, 1969, where he was accompanied by his studio guitarist Ira Stone . They played 10 songs, including the Simon & Garfunkel cover America and Jennifer . The latter had written Sommer about Jennifer Warnes , whom he knew from Hair in Los Angeles .
Sommer subsequently recorded two more albums, but their success was, apart from the Woodstock single We're All Playing in the Same Band , low. He was also a member of the rock band The Left Banke .
He died on July 23, 1990 in New York of a chronic respiratory disease.
