Live and act

Berthold comes from the family of the Counts von Pfirt . His parents were Friedrich II, Count von Pfirt, and his second wife Heilwig von Urach , a daughter of Egino IV , Count von Urach. He is first recorded as a canon in Basel in 1230 . In 1237/40 he was a canon in Strasbourg and in 1243 provost of the Moutier-Grandval monastery . On 31 March 1248 it ordered Pope Innocent IV. To the coadjutor of the Basel bishop Lüthold II. Of Rötteln , whom he succeeded in office after his resignation the same year.

Berthold increased the possessions of the diocese, so he succeeded in snatching Konrad IV. Rheinfelden and conquering Breisach in 1255 , which however was lost to the Habsburgs after a few years and became a free imperial city in 1273 . Berthold stood on the side of the Pope in conflict with the Hohenstaufen and was part of the Pope-supported Kings William of Holland and Richard of Cornwall . He joined the Rhenish Association of Cities from 1254 to 1257 .

In his diocese he promoted the monasteries and supported the settlement of the mendicant orders . 1250 he procured the Franciscans in Basel a building site for the construction of Barfüsserkirche , in their last home on Spalentor were Cistercian used. In 1253, Berthold abolished the disreputable Benedictine convent Michelbach and, together with his brother Count Ulrich II von Pfirt, founded the Cistercian convent Michelfelden in Saint-Louis near Basel. In 1255 he confirmed the freedoms of the city of Basel and in 1256 allowed a baker's guild and in 1260 a tailor's guild in the city. When Berthold became seriously ill in 1261 - probably a stroke - the Pope appointed Heinrich von Neuchâtel as coadjutor. After his death on December 10, 1262, he was buried in Basel Minster .
