Family coat of arms of the Berthout family

The Berthout were a noble family from Brabant.

Walter I. owned areas in Grimbergen and in the Kempenland . The Walters III War against Brabant, led to the destruction of Grimbergen Castle in 1159. The family restricted the rule of the bishops of Liège over Mechelen and became lords of Mechelen . They donated the Teutonic Order Commander in Pitsenburg. They were allies of the Dukes of Brabant . The main line went out in 1331 with the death of Floris, whose daughter Sophie was married to Rainald II von Geldern . A sideline of the Lords von Duffel continued until 1367 at the latest.
