Holmlund (2008)

Bertil Holmlund (born February 5, 1947 ) is a Swedish economist and university professor . He is best known as the chairman of the Prize Committee for the Swedish Reichsbank's Prize for Economics in memory of Alfred Nobel . In this function, he has been announcing the winner every year since 2008. The focus of his academic work is in the field of labor market and unemployment research .

Career

Holmlund studied at Umeå University . After graduating from the college with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970, he obtained the academic degree of a doctor in 1976 with the dissertation “Arbetslöshet och lönebildning” (German: unemployment and wage determination ) . At the same time, he was involved in university operations as a lecturer at the business faculty from 1972 .

From 1976 Holmlund worked at the private Industrial Institute for Economic and Social Research in Stockholm, and in 1985 he moved to the Trade Union Institute for Economic Research . From 1984 he was an associate professor at Stockholm University. In 1987 he followed a call from Uppsala University . During his work in Sweden he held several visiting professorships outside the country's borders and researched and taught at the University of Michigan , University of Southampton , Australian National University and University of Copenhagen , among others .

In addition to his scientific work, Holmlund also appeared in an advisory capacity for government authorities. On the one hand, he was active for the European Union , on the other hand, he chaired the Ekonomiska rådet of the Swedish government from 2001 . He was also involved in national and international scientific organizations and from 2002 he was President of the European Association of Labor Economists . He gave up both positions in 2005. In the same year he was elected for the second time after 1998 to 2001 to the six-member Nobel Prize Committee, which determines the Nobel Prize in Economics. In 2007, as chairman of the awards committee, he took over the awarding of the Assar Lindbeck Medal, which was awarded for the first time .

In 2008 Holmlund was elected chairman of the award committee for the Nobel Prize in Economics.
