Berwick is a district of the Australian city of Melbourne . With around 47,674 inhabitants, it makes up about one percent of Melbourne's population. Berwick is part of the County City of Casey .
The place was originally a resting place on the postal route to Gippsland . The local inn ( Berwick Inn ), which was named by its owner after his English hometown, Berwick-upon-Tweed , gave the village its name.
In 1938 the first private airfield was built in Berwick.
An avenue of poplars along the main road and Beaconsfield to the fallen of World War I remember. Originally, nameplates were supposed to be attached to the individual trees, but this has not yet happened.
Probably Berwick's most famous son is Richard Casey , who later became the Baron von Berwick.
