Attractions

Bethlehem Chapel
  • Chapel of the Nativity Grotto : It was built in 1674 on the slope of Engelberg as a donation by Abbot Bernardus Rosa based on the model of the chapel at the Augustinian monastery in Prague. The design comes from the monastery builder Martin Schuppert (* around 1633 in Bohemia; † 1710 in Landeshut), who was also responsible for the construction management. The stucco decor was created in 1675 by Matthias Mayer from Bavaria. Since 1927 the chapel has served as a replacement for the dismantled Stations of the Cross V of the Grüssauer Kalvarienberg monastery .
  • The abbots' water pavilion was built around 1730 as a foundation by the abbot Innozenz Fritsch . It was built on stilts on the bottom of the water and surrounded by a wooden portico. The interior is decorated with architectural paintings by Georg Wilhelm Neunhertz depicting scenes from the Old Testament. The lower row shows images related to water, the upper row depicts the story of King David. In the lantern there are oval busts with warriors of David. The steep tent roof is crowned with a tall, octagonal lantern. The facility was reached from the bank via a covered bridge.
