The Bed and Sleep Museum is a special museum in the Saxon city ​​of Freiberg that has existed since 2012 . In the premises of the Betten-Uhlmann company, an extraordinary museum concept has been implemented on approx. 600 m²: The exhibition deals with the bed and sleep culture .

The museum collects, preserves and reveals evidence of the bed and sleep culture. In addition to a permanent exhibition , the museum has changing thematic exhibitions.

History, tasks and goals

"Catalan donkey": a bed preheater originally from Spain . The warmth of the glowing coals in the hanging pot warmed the bed cavity under the covers. This exhibit comes from France.

The museum, which opened on November 10, 2012, is thematically dedicated to the role of sleep in the course of human history and development, such as sleep in children and adolescents, sleep in old age, sleep phenomena such as sleepwalking , sleep apnea , snoring and dreams . The museum offers an insight into the origin, causes and consequences of sleep disorders and provides suggestions for healthy sleep hygiene . At the same time it shows how people slept in the past and the present. Numerous exhibits complement the textual information. The opening of the museum was preceded by years of research and collection of exhibits by the museum director Thomas Uhlmann. From his private collection bed articles were as bed warmers , bed stones , Bettöfen and bed shear integrated into the museum.

The historical development of bed and sleep culture is presented. The introduction to various topics related to sleep takes place through graphics, photos, videos and texts. The collection of historical bed objects and objects of sleep culture contains over 100 exhibits in the state of preservation from new to no longer functional, restoration measures are not planned.

About 120 themed panels provide background information on the history of bed and sleep, e.g. B. about medical backgrounds, sleep in other cultures, about extreme sleep situations such. B. Sleep in space, sleep while traveling, cause and interpretation of dreams , sleep problems, causes and elimination of sleep problems and sleep as torture . Another topic is devoted to the development of nightwear . The oldest as well as the most expensive bed are presented. The effect of herbal sleeping pills is described. Information on the subject of "healthy sleep" is also provided.

Many originals as well as the "glass bedding manufactory" show the functionality and differences in different times and cultures. Eight audio stations as well as a video terminal enable the visitor to deal in depth with individual subject areas. Short films provide insights into selected key topics. A microscope workstation enables the visitor to view various bed fillings (virgin sheep's wool , wild silk , cashmere wool , camel wool , lyocell , polyester fibers as well as feathers and down ) in magnification.

Museum concept

With the combination of a private museum and a specialty shop, a concept is realized that is financed solely from donations and does not require additional personnel or material costs.
