Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas (* before 1979 in Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan-American UN civil servant and since 2018 Director of UNICRI in Turin .

Origin and education

Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas was born in Uruguay and later became a US citizen. She graduated from American University in Washington, DC with a BA in Business Administration in 1979 and earned an MBA specializing in finance and investment from George Washington University in 1982 .

Career

Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas worked alongside her studies from 1975 to 1980 at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC. From 1984 to 1992, she worked as an auditor in Chevy Chase (Maryland) . In 1994 she came to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna , where she held various managerial positions until 2008, before moving to UNICEF in New York as budget director . In 2011 she returned to the IAEA as Assistant Director with responsibility for finance. In 2014 Bartsiotas was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as Deputy Secretary General and Controller with responsibility for program planning , budget and accounting in the UN Secretariat. Here she was decisively involved in the implementation of IPSAS (International Accounting Standards) and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).

In September 2018, Bartsiotas took over the management of the UN Institute for Interregional Crime and Justice Research (UNICRI) in Turin . On her appointment, she pointed out the great transnational challenges in a dramatically changing world: conflict, organized crime, terrorism, illegal trade and the abuse of new technologies. The world's social, economic and judicial systems were exposed to greater dangers than ever before. Millions of people are deprived of their basic rights and therefore peace, development and justice are concepts that are difficult to grasp for them. The answers to these challenges would have to be uniform, diverse and innovative and develop strong synergies.

Private

While at the Inter-American Development Bank , she met her husband George Bartsiotas, who later became a member of the United Nations Joint Inspection Group .
