Betty Freeman

Betty Freeman (born June 3, 1921 in Chicago , Illinois , † January 4, 2009 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American photographer who worked as an art patron for decades .

Life

Freeman grew up in Brooklyn as the daughter of a Russian immigrant . She graduated from Wellesley College in literature and music in 1942 . She trained as a concert pianist, but switched to music and event management in the mid-1960s. Since then she has also been active as a patron and supported composers at the beginning of their careers. The musicians she has sponsored include John Cage , La Monte Young , Philip Glass , Harry Partch , Steve Reich and Harrison Birtwistle . Many of these musicians subsequently dedicated their works to her, including the Freeman Etudes by John Cage named after her . From 1972 she began taking portrait photography of composers. In 2005 Paul Fenkart made a documentary about her life.
