life and work

Lewis' maternal grandmother, Ada Ranck Buchwalter, was an old-order Mennonite , not an Amish, who left her denomination at the age of 18 to marry a student who would later become a preacher for Evangelical Covenant Church . Lewis' father was also a preacher. She grew up with her parents and a sister in Neffsville , a suburb of Lancaster , Pennsylvania.

After attending Evangel University in Springfield , Missouri, Lewis became a school and music teacher. She wrote from childhood, but only began to publish when her children were already in middle school : first in magazines, then followed in 1993 with her first book, Mountain Bikes and Garbanzo Beans (Volume 22 in today's Cul-de-sac Kids - Series). After years of writing for children and young people, Lewis first published an adult novel in 1997, The Shunning (1997), in which she freely retells the story of her Mennonite grandmother. The book became a bestseller, had a circulation of more than 1 million copies and was made into a film for television. Lewis, whose novel acts always in Lancaster County are located, is considered the inventor and most important representative of the Amish Romance Novel ( "Amish romance"), the authentic Amish literature has certainly nothing to do but set pieces of Amish life world used serial Unterhaltungsliteratur produce , which is historically in the tradition of modern Christian fiction and the Bodice Ripper . Lewis has found numerous imitators, among which Cindy Woodsmall and Wanda Brunstetter are the best known.

Lewis has published more than 80 books in total. Her novels have been translated into 11 languages, including German. Her novel The Thorn (2010) reached number 11 on the New York Times paperback bestseller list the month it was published .

Lewis has three grown children and lives in Monument , Colorado with her husband David . She is a member of the National League of American Pen Women and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators .
