Bewobau settlement Quickborn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bewobau settlement Quickborn is a residential estate in Quickborn Marienhöhe, which was built 1962–1963 based on designs by Richard Neutra . The settlement consists of 67 single and double-storey single and double houses, which are designed in nine types . Typical features of the Neutra style are typical features of the Neutra style, such as large glass surfaces, flowing transitions between interior and exterior spaces, reflecting ponds , overhanging flat roofs and asymmetrical floor plans. The buildings have been a listed building since 2006. At the same time, Bewobau built a similar settlement based on Neutra designs in Mörfelden-Walldorf .

History of construction and use

The settlement is on a rectangular area in the south of Quickborn. The narrow side of the settlement is around 360 m wide and is bounded in the south by Heidkampstrasse and in the north by Harksheider Weg. The broad side of the settlement is about 600 m long, and borders on Kieler Strasse (B4) in the west and the Hamburg-Altona-Neumünster railway line in the east , which is now operated by AKN .

The Hamburger Betreuungs- und Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH (Bewobau) got to know Richard Neutra through a sales exhibition of single-family houses and commissioned him to design two housing estates - in Quickborn and in Walldorf. The single-family houses should correspond to a modern architectural style, but still appear generous with little space requirement. All the designed type buildings have flat roofs. The living space is 97 to 160 m² on plots from 530 to 1,380 m². The outdoor and garden facilities were designed by the Hamburg landscape architect Gustav Lüttge , who became famous for designing the Alsterpark for the IGA in 1953.

Originally, Bewobau wanted to build 190 residential units. Construction costs increased due to details such as steel -framed windows, Douglas fir ceiling paneling and Chrysler Airtemp warm air heating systems imported from the USA, which caused the new purchase price to rise to 162,000 to 249,000 Deutschmarks for the time. So there were difficulties with the marketing, but Bewobau was not alone: other home projects built in advance in the Hamburg area were also empty, for example in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel and Reinbek . In order to promote the sale of the houses, Bewobau offered a free Volkswagen car in 1965 as a bonus when buying a house . However, this was not enough for the project to be successful, so the housing association only had 67 instead of the planned 190 residential units completed. The rest of the building site was built on with conventional single-family houses.

In 1970 structural defects and violations of various DIN regulations were found in an expert report. In particular, stones that were not weather-resistant crumbled from the outer wall. Signs of moisture penetration and joint defects were also complained about.

In 2006 the buildings were placed under monument protection. The two Bewobau projects were presented in more detail at the exhibition Richard Neutra in Europe - Buildings and Projects 1960–1970 . The exhibition was shown in 2010 in the MARTa Herford and in the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel, and in 2011 in the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main.
