reception

John Fordham gave the album four (out of five) stars and wrote under the heading “ eloquent, bold jazz ” in the Guardian , “the bird-like sound, the terse eloquence and the Thelonious Monk- inspired structural audacity of the late soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy ” would often be the Swiss woodwind player Jürg Wickihalder, a European jazz star, will conduct. Percussionist Lucas Niggli shows himself to be a versatile musician, Barry Guy, the classical bass virtuoso, plays at the age of 70 with the same energy that he has shown over the past 50 years. “Abstract improvisation passages precede dreamy saxophone meditations or voiced complaints of an Albert Ayler- like zeal in contrast ; ballad-like pieces bloom gently while the saxophonist's partners flit and hop back and forth; the lyrical “Süssholz” is a delicate dialogue for a gentle tenor saxophone and guys-sounding pizzicato . Unusual jazz compositions, brilliant virtuosity, collective improvisation and inviting songlic melodies merge here in a subtle way. "

According to Derek Taylor (Dusted), “Swiss sensitivity to good humor and camaraderie” are essential facets of the trio's music, as two of the players are Swiss citizens and bassist Barry Guy has been based in the Alps for years. The geographic proximity certainly contributed to the creation of the trio, says the author, “but the music they make together quickly reveals deeper, indelible bonds. It is the latter elements that lead the two-day session, recorded in autumn [2016], out of the predictability of the province into the realm of something very special. ”Most noticeable is the feeling of fun that permeates the sessions and that is shared between the players while making music and testing each other's skills in a playful way, the author sums up. This consistent sociability has a direct effect on the listener, relatively undiluted and refreshing.
