Jürg Wickihalder (* 1973 in Glarus ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( soprano , alto and tenor saxophone ) and composer .

Live and act

Wickihalder studied from 1989 to 1992 at the Lucerne Jazz School , then until 1995 at the Berklee College of Music with Joe Viola and George Garzone . He also took lessons from Steve Lacy . He toured Europe first as a member of B. Connection and Interplay Collective , with whom he recorded albums in 1995 and 1997. In 1998 he was the musical director of Tim Krohn's play “Revolution mit Hund”, which was performed at the Zurich Schauspiel Akademie as part of the Zurich Festival. Wickihalder composed numerous compositions based on texts by Krohn, such as Brandruf , Schneewittchen or Die kleine Oper vom Herbstmondfächer.

Since 2000 he has performed in a duo with Irène Schweizer . He founded his own groups, quartet line-ups as well as the 14-piece Jürg Wickihalder Orchestra. He also performed in a duo with Chris Wiesendanger and formed the band Jazz Coalition with Werner Tian Fischer , which toured China in 2004. In the same year he played Even Odds ( Prisoner of Time ) with Marco Käppelis . He has also performed with Pierre Favre , Urs Leimgruber , Hans Koch , Co Streiff , Lucas Niggli , Evan Parker and Barry Guy . He is also a member of Ulrich Gumpert's newly formed quartet , Omri Ziegeles large formation Billiger Bauer , Tommy Meier's Root Down , Werner Tian Fischer's Travelogue and the Virgil Moorefield Ensemble.

Prizes and awards

Wickihalder winner of numerous composition and solo prizes, he was in the 1994 Dean's List received the Berklee College of Music and was awarded the 1995 Annual Student Award of downbeat excellent. In 2000 he received the Pro Arte Foundation Prize . He was also nominated as a "Selmer Paris Artist".
