Sam Trumpy

Samuel "Sam" Trümpy (born March 13, 1941 in Glarus ; † November 11, 2003 ibid) was a Swiss jazz musician ( clarinet , soprano , alto and tenor saxophone , composition , arrangements ) and cook .

Live and act

Trümpy first received piano lessons, then first clarinet lessons in Glarus Boys' Music; From 1958 clarinet lessons with Henri Freivogel at the Zurich Jazz School followed. He initially turned to traditional jazz and from 1959 played with the Flat Feet . From 1960 to 1967 he was a member of the Lucky Tremblers . After spending two years in New York City, he became a member of the City Workshop Band in 1969 , for which he also composed (as an autodidact ). In the same year he also became a member of the Glarona Jazz Tigers . In 1978 he founded the first big band in the canton of Glarus, the Glarona Big Band , which existed until 1989. Since 1976 he has belonged to the Coalition or bands that emerged from it, such as the Jazz Coalition , New Coalition and Vocoalition . He was also a member of the Saper Sux saxophone quartet since 1988 .

In 1980 Trümpy was awarded the Glarus Culture Prize for his services to jazz in the canton. Werner Tian Fischer organized the 2007 Swiss tour of the Sam Trümpy Memorial Jazz Coalition , which also recorded an album with compositions by Trümpy.
