history

The modern, political districts of the Habsburg Monarchy were created around 1868 in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration.

The Tolmein district was formed in 1868 from the Kirchheim , Flitsch and Tolmein judicial districts . In 1869 37,591 people lived in the district, in 1880 the district housed 36,459 residents. Until 1890 the population increased only slightly to 37,002 people.

The formation of the Karfreit judicial district was only decided in 1895 and implemented on January 1, 1900. For the establishment of the judicial district, municipalities of the Tolmein judicial district and a municipality of the Flitsch judicial district were merged as the Karfreit judicial district.

The Tolmein district covered an area of 1040.61 km² in 1910 and housed a population of 38,239 people, of whom 37,889 had given Slovene as a colloquial language, 122 German speakers, 29 Italian speakers and 199 foreign speakers or foreigners lived in the district. The district included four judicial districts with a total of 24 parishes.
