The history of the clinic goes back to 1905 when the Kutzenberg District Insane Asylum was put into operation. 1946 was the founding year for a tuberculosis hospital with a first department for bone and joint tuberculosis. Due to increasing diseases in the area of the musculoskeletal system, the Clinic for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery developed from this in 1965.

At the beginning of the 2010s, a total of over 8,000 patients, mainly from the catchment area of Upper , Middle and Lower Franconia as well as southern Thuringia and Saxony, were treated as inpatients at the Obermain District Clinic in Kutzenberg.

The specialist clinics with older buildings in the pavilion style from the turn of the century and functional complexes of modern medical facilities are spread over the site of the former Kutzenberg estate.
