Bhekokwakhe Hamilton "Bheki" Cele [ ǀɛlɛ ] (born April 22, 1952 in uMzumbe mission near Port Shepstone ) is a South African politician ( African National Congress , ANC) and former police officer. He has been the country's police minister since 2018.

Life

Cele was born to Golford Cele, a South African Railways foreman , and Albertina Mtshali. His mother died when he was nine months old, his father a few years later. He moved to Lamontville to live with relatives, where he passed his matric . He obtained a teaching degree and then taught at the Mbumbulu School. He joined the ANC and, with other teachers, founded the National Education Union of South Africa, the forerunner of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union. He is involved in the United Democratic Front . Cele met the future president Jacob Zuma , who helped him escape in 1984. In Angola , Cele received military training as a member of the Umkhonto we Sizwe . On his return to South Africa in 1987, he was arrested and detained on Robben Island . In 1990 he was released and resumed his work for the ANC.

Cele has been a member of the Provincial Legislature of KwaZulu-Natal since 1994 . Among other things, he was involved in the Operation kuShunquthuli program for the construction of roads in rural areas.

In 2009 Cele was appointed Head ( National Commissioner ) of the South African Police Service (SAPS). During his tenure he introduced military rankings, such as general for his own position. In 2010 he was responsible for the police escorting the soccer World Cup in South Africa. In October 2011, Cele was suspended on suspicion of corruption and released in June 2012. He was charged with two illegal contracts for properties worth 1.7 billion Rand to have been completed.

In early 2014, Cele tried to postpone the publication of the report on President Zuma's private residence by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela after accusing him of failure during his tenure on this matter.

After the April 2014 elections , Cele became Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, such as: "Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries"; In 2018, Cyril Ramaphosa appointed him to his cabinet as Minister of Police . Cele is also a member of the Ramaphosa II cabinet .

Cele is a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC.
